On-line pre-registration is open
until midnight Thursday April 29th.
NOTE:
For 2010, cost of registering the day of the event has increased (see rates above).
If you pre-register online, the price is the same as last year. Plus,
you'll get a pre-marked map. Pre-registration will open for an event
a few days after the previous event is complete. Pre-registration will generally
close the Thursday before each event to allow time for printing the maps.
Details:
Busse Woods, just east of Woodfield Mall, will be a delight for
precise navigators this spring. We'll be using the wooded section
on the north side of Higgins Road. The area is very flat, with large
areas without trails or other man-made features, so it is easy to
get lost! Plan on practicing pace counting, walking a compass bearing,
and other orienteering techniques such as use of handrails, attack
points and catching features. Come to the Beginners' Clinic at 9:30
if you want to learn what it's all about!
We'll be offering the standard courses -- white and yellow for
beginners, orange for intermediate, and red and green for advanced.
Hope to see you there!
Directions (Driving):
Take I-90 (Kennedy Expwy and Northwest Tollway) northwest of the
Loop 21 miles. Exit at Arlington Heights Rd. and turn left (south).
Go 1 mile to Higgins Rd. Turn right and go 1.2 miles to the second
entrance to the forest preserve on your right. Watch for the red
and white orienteering signs to direct you to the registration area.
You can also take I-290 / Route 53 to Higgins Rd. and go east 1.2
miles to the second forest preserve entrance on the left
(north).
Public Transit:
The Pace #208 bus runs every half-hour starting at 8:43 from the
Davis stop on the Purple Line in Evanston, or at 8:03 from the Des
Plaines Metra station. Twenty minutes after that the bus travels
along Golf Road which borders Busse Woods on the north. Another
option is the #606 Pace bus that leaves the Rosemont stop on the
Blue Line at 8:15 and 9:45 Sunday mornings and also takes twenty
minutes to get to Golf Road. Get off either bus near the I-90 overpass
over Golf. Walk west on Golf Rd and then south along the Salt Creek
embankment and into the fields and woods of the forest preserve,
and use an old orienteering map for guidance to get to the shelter
where the event is being held. On the way back to the City, I like
to stop for a hamburger and beer at Portillo’s or Chili’s
on Golf Road near the bus stop. An alternate route if you don’t
want to bushwhack is to get off the bus at Arlington Heights Road
and walk south to the bike path where it crosses Higgins Road.(under
1 mile of walking from the bus to the meet location)
