Join us on August 28th for a unique urban orienteering experience in the Chicago Loop. The start/finish and registration are located in the activities room on the second floor of the REI store at 1466 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60642. We will be using a map covering downtown Chicago provided at registration. Upon registration, each participant will also be given an Answer Sheet that includes questions that can only be answered when they are at the control locations on the map.

The format of the course is a Score-O where participants go to as many control locations as they have time to collect correct answers during the time period of the race. Racers can select either a 1-hour (Short), 2-hour (Medium) or 4-hour (Long) time limit. Each correct answer collected with be scored as one point and each minute late in returning to the start/finish will subtract a point.

Racers can choose to participate on foot or on a bicycle. Racers can also ride the CTA (Bus or El) or water taxis (but may not take a car taxi or otherwise ride in a vehicle). All participants must follow all traffic laws and safety rules. Helmets are required for bikers.

Key details

  • Score-O format
  • 1 point deducted for each minute late
  • Can use public transportion (CTA train or bus or water taxis) but no other wheeled or motorized transport
  • Must follow all pedestrian rules such as when crossing streets
  • Racers will fill out a clue sheet to prove they were at each control by answering question that can only be answered by being at the control (no e-punch needed)
  • If you guess a wrong answer for a control you didn't visit, a point will be deducted from your score.
  • This meet involves crossing many busy streets and navigating through the city of Chicago so extra caution is advised, especially if you are bringing children.

The meet will start the REI Lincoln Park, 1466 N. Halsted St., Chicago, IL 60642. Look for us in the Activities room on the second floor.

Directions:

1466 North Halsted Street
Chicago, IL 60642

Notes:

1. The store does not open until 10:00 on Sunday so registration will not open until 10:05.
2 . There is a pay parking garage next to the REI store. Other parking is very limited.
