Details:
The Poplar Creek map, located in the western part of the 4,200-acre
Poplar Creek Forest Preserve in Hoffman Estates, features open woods,
gently rolling prairie, its namesake creek, and a variety of trails.
The topography is subtle with a few shallow reentrants, knolls and
depressions. Ruins of old buildings and fences are common in the
south and west sections of the map (including a few unmapped ruined
barbed wire fences—watch out!). At the northern edge of the map,
there is a small nature preserve containing pristine, undisturbed
prairie land, a rarity in Illinois.
While this area may not present the technical and physical challenges
of some of our other maps, it does leave plenty of opportunity for
good, fun orienteering. The standard White, Yellow, Orange courses
will be offered for beginner and intermediate level orienteers.
Advanced orienteers will have two sprint courses available. Update:
There will also be a Bike-O course available to all. Bring your
mountain or hybrid bike for some extra orienteering fun! (Road bikes
are not recommended).
Public Transportation:
A great day to use a folding bike! The Metra train arrives in Bartlett
at 9:30 a.m. Jog/bike north on Oak Ave to Hwy 20. Jog left then
right and continue north on Bartlett Road; left on Bode Road; right
on Sutton Road for the last mile into parking lot on west side of
Sutton (6 miles from station) On the return, ask someone to drop
you back at the station.
Directions:
Take the Northwest Tollway (I-90) 19 miles west of O'Hare to Exit
11—Sutton Road-South (Hwy 59); proceed south 1.5 miles to
turn right into parking lot a mile south of expressway. Registration
is at second (western) shelter.
