Thank you to everyone who came out on this hot day in July. It was great weather for paddling. There were no bugs, and just enough breeze to keep it from being too stuffy.
Milan Kratka was the big winner of the day, coming in first in both the Medium and Long courses. It was fun to watch him fly in his racing canoes. Team Vericross came in second on the Medium course 6 minutes behind. There was a close race for 3rd place, with four teams finishing within 2.5 minutes of one another. Whew!
Martin Kratka, Milan's son, came in second on the Long course by 4 minutes. Team Brat rounded out the top 3.
Route choice once again played a key role, as decisions to portage boats vs. paddling vs. running separately from the boat lead to some longer leg times for some competitors. This is the essence of canoe-O, and it interesting to see how different teams faced the challenge.
Thanks to Paul Muffler for providing so much assistance everywhere, as well as Boris Tannenbaum for help at registration, and the Canoesances for picking up over half the controls. Thenks to the folks at the canoe rental concession for dealing calmly with the confusion around boat reservations, and folks returning their boats early. Of course, thanks to Christina Collins for helping out with setting the course, and to Erin and Josh for their cooperation.
