Details:
A new form of orienteering called Scatter-O will be offered
to advanced (Green and Red) runners at the Bemis Woods meet. Similar
to a score-O, scatter-O does not have a fixed course. Scatter-O
will have a mass start at 11 a.m. for all runners (individual starts
will be assigned earlier or later by request), and offer 25-30
control
locations from which Red runners will have to visit 20 controls
in any order, and Green runners will have to visit 16. Winners
will
be decided by finishing order since all competitors will be on "real
time." In addition, a new USGS map will provide an opportunity
to run for the first time in the adjacent woods north of 31st street
using only a rough black-and-white map. And to make navigation
more
complex, uncrossable Salt Creek splits this map into two sections,
and there are only three bridges!
Directions:
From the Loop, take I-290 west 14 miles. Follow the signs for
south I-294 (Tri-State Tollway). Go about 3.5 miles south to Ogden
Ave (east). Go about a half mile east to the first entrance to the
forest preserve on your left. Stay left as you enter the forest
preserve. Watch for the red and white orienteering signs to direct
you to the registration area.
You can avoid the tollway by taking Mannheim/LaGrange Road 3.7
miles south of I-290 to Ogden Ave. Turn right and go 1.9 miles west
to the forest preserve entrance on your right. Watch for the red
and white orienteering signs to direct you to the registration area.
Public Transportation:
METRA train from Chicago arrives at Western Springs station at 9:03
a.m. Walk about a half mile directly north to cross Ogden Avenue
into forest preserve.
